Bangladesh is the champion after beating Oman in a tiebreaker. A great success has come in the hockey of Bangladesh today. Be it at the youth level, still being an unbeaten champion at the Asian level is a big achievement. That too at Oman’s ground, Oman lost.
Bangladesh U-21 hockey team won a thrilling final against Oman today. Oman lost the tiebreaker to Bangladesh 7–6 in the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Cup U-21 tournament final.
Hosts Oman took the lead after 2 minutes at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman. Bangladesh returned to the match with the goal of Rokibul Hasan in the 53rd minute. Despite falling behind, Bangladesh took the match to a tiebreaker after finishing the 60-minute game with a 1-1 goal. Then in the penalty shootout, both teams scored three goals in the first five hits. Oman could not win the title at home in sudden death.
Bangladesh won the Under-21 Asian Hockey Federation Cup in 2014. That year in Dhaka, the final was won 4-0 against Oman. Bangladesh did not play next time in 2019. It is a big happy news for Bangladesh hockey to be able to finally win against Oman after eight years.
Before going to Oman, Bangladesh coach Mamunur Rashid, however, was not very confident about becoming the champion. Because the practice has only been a couple of weeks. But Mamun was optimistic that his team will reach the final. In the end, Bangladesh became the undefeated champion. The youth of Bangladesh are returning home tomorrow morning.
